I’ve made a grand total of $50 from this blog in the past 12-13 years. But I will treat it like it’s my job when there’s a new grocery store dessert product released. It’s my professional duty to try them and see if they can be baked with. In this case: the Reese’s and Oreo collab/crossover. Both Oreo and Reese’s released versions of their product that combines with the other product. Innovation! Kind of. I’m pretty sure peanut butter Oreos have existed before. (Unlike the Oreo flavored Coca Cola from earlier this year… that was entirely new.)
We’ve all known since 1998 that peanut butter with Oreos is delicious. So peanut butter filled Oreos is not groundbreaking. The Reese’s cups with Oreo chunks in them? Slightly more interesting and exciting. But just not really necessary. I wouldn’t prefer them to a regular Reese’s.
I think Reese’s and Oreo are being a bit like Icarus here. Just be good with your product. They’re iconic. They’re delicious. They’re simple, and people know what they’re getting. Why must you mess with them? Why must you try to combine with every other delicious product? Can they not be content with what they each bring to the table? Does combining two perfect products even make a better one? Must they fly so close to the sun?
All this to say… these products don’t really need to exist and aren’t worth it. But… the Reese’s Oreos are good in these cookies. Normal Oreos would be good in these cookies too. This just ups the peanut butter ante. Which, I’m not complaining about. I will never complain about too much peanut butter.
Could I have thought of something more interesting to make with these Oreos? Definitely. But I don’t want to fly too close to the sun myself. Icarus and his wings is a story of hubris, and since I have a lot of hubris, I will heed the story. And then I will have hubris about the fact that I would never fly too close to the sun myself. And so, for these cookies, why mess with a simple and great thing. Just let them be. Peanut butter and Oreos do not need all the crazy fanfare. They don’t need all the work. They’re good as just Oreo with peanut butter spread on it.
So just make the simplest peanut butter cookie and add the Oreo. Leave the crazy stuff to the less established flavors. They’re still trying to find their perfect combos.
