This brown butter miso pasta could not be more simple. And it could not be more delicious. Which is pretty much my favorite combination for any meal, but especially for comfort food. There’s comfort food, and then there’s comfort food that is so easy to make that having dinner ready in 10 minutes is part of the comfort. Does that make sense? I hope it does. Because I’m going to keep talking about it.
I saw this in an Instagram reel, and knew immediately that I had to make it. (Or, make my version of it that does not require commenting for a recipe.) Partially because it looked delicious, and partly because I had some miso in the pantry that I’ve been wanting to use. But then I got more miso to make this pasta again, because it was really quite tasty.
This isn’t exactly an every night kind of meal, considering there’s brown butter in it. It just feels a little extra decadent and special, even if it takes 10 minutes to come together. But being able to make a meal that tastes like this in 10 minutes? With 4 ingredients? Magic!
I shouldn’t be surprised that brown butter and miso go together so well. I feel like a brown butter miso blondie would not be amiss at all. But to have them go together so well in a savory way was a bit surprising! I associate brown butter so much with sweet flavors, so it was fun to have it in a different way. Because it doesn’t taste at all like a decadent brown butter treat – it just lends some extra nuttiness to the flavor of the miso.
The video I saw that inspired this added shredded cheese to the sauce as well, but I didn’t add any. I didn’t think it needed it. But I’ll leave it to you to decide if it needs it. I also added some meatballs to round the meal out, but I think I might choose a different protein in the future. Or just, different meatballs. I was just using the frozen kind, and they seemed like a letdown that didn’t totally match the flavor of this recipe. I could see this going well with some chicken, that can just absorb the sauce and not compete with the flavor.
This is an incredibly simple but satisfying flavor combo, and I’m thinking that it doesn’t really need any extra flair. Could you probably add to this? Yeah. But I’m not sure I want to. Just let it be simple and delicious. It’s comfort food, and simple is comforting!

Brown Butter Miso Pasta
Ingredients
- 1 serving pasta of choice
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 shallot, diced
- 1/4 cup miso
- protein of choice
- shredded parmesan, if desired
Instructions
- Prepare pasta according to package instructions.
- While the pasta is cooking, brown your butter in a pan over medium heat. Allow butter to melt and don’t stir it around, allowing the milk solids to turn brown. Once the butter has browned and is smelling fragrant and nutty, add in the diced shallots. They’ll cook quickly and smell very good. Stir around and toss with the brown butter for about a minute. Then, add in the miso and stir everything together.
- Lower the heat, and add in the strained, cooked pasta.
- Once all the pasta has been coated in the sauce, it’s ready to serve. Add some protein and/or shredded Parmesan, if desired.
