I’m generally pretty good at getting in and out of the grocery store pretty efficiently. But sometimes I’m drawn in by an impulse purchase. The latest one was a package of Chocolate Covered Pretzel Oreos. I couldn’t see that flavor and not try them, and I knew that if they weren’t good I could just bake with them. I had my suspicions from the get-go that they would not be fantastic. It’s a good thing I always have my no-churn ice cream recipe at the ready to make some No Churn Cookies n’ Cream!
They weren’t bad, but they weren’t great. If you want a chocolate covered pretzel, eat one. If you want an Oreo, eat one. Why do chocolate covered pretzel Oreos have to exist? What niche is this product filling in the market? You can’t fulfill any craving with one, because they aren’t as good as either of the things they are attempting to combine.
It feels like sometime around a decade ago, brands decided to start coming up with new flavors for things by throwing things at the wall and collaborating with other brands. It feels like that’s been happening even more than usual now. Is that a recession indicator? People can’t afford vacations, so we spend on random grocery items to get some excitement? Even though the grocery store prices are already through the roof?
Or maybe I’m just paying more attention to the products.
My brother suggested making cookies n’ cream ice cream out of these, and I thought that was a great idea. Honestly, all of the random types of Oreos could be made into cookies n’ cream ice cream variations. I think Cookies n Cream is the best way to enjoy Oreos, and using one of their niche flavors makes it feel deluxe.
It’s silly that Oreo tries to market themselves as a cookie to dip in milk. “Milk’s favorite cookie!” Well sure, but that means that I’m going to soak crumbs of their cookies in vanilla ice cream that I made from heavy whipping cream. Go hard or go home!
(No Churn Cookies n’ Cream is the easiest thing in the world, don’t be intimidated.)
