My siblings and I are doing a Lord of the Rings (Extended Editions) marathon, and I wanted to do themed food and dessert every night for it. In my search for idea, I found this reddit post that details every time they eat on screen. And I was very confused when I saw “cupcakes” listed for Fellowship of the Ring. Surely they are not eating cupcakes in Lord of the Rings? Surely that’s a stand in for something else?
But nope. There really are cupcakes on screen, 10 minutes into the extended edition of Fellowship of the Ring:
Right as the voiceover says, “In fact, it has been remarked by some that the hobbits’ only real passion is for food…”
I love hobbits. And I love the idea that someone just brought cupcakes to set one day and they used them in this scene. I love the implication that the hobbits are just making sprinkles in Middle Earth. I also love this random extra’s expressions. He was there with a dream and he executed.
So naturally, much like they were able to create a whole new LOTR movie based on a few paragraphs from some background Tolkein writing, I decided to create a recipe based on some cupcakes that get 3 seconds of screentime.

Also… the Fellowship is the movie where they eat and drink the least on camera. And they don’t exactly eat dessert ever in the films other than this. So I had to go with it.
I’ll admit, these cupcakes are not the most exciting. It was hard to think of a way to make these exciting when they are clearly vanilla cupcakes with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. You could add almond extract to the cupcakes, or make the ganache more exciting.
But I was just so excited that hobbit cupcakes were canonical to the movies that I had to make them!

Hobbit Cupcakes
Ingredients
For the cupcakes:
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup white sugar, I prefer caster/super fine sugar
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour*, measured correctly
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt, a small pinch
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the ganache:
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350F degrees.
- Line the 6 tin of a regular-sized muffin tin with cupcake liners.
- In a medium bowl using a hand-held electric mixer, beat the egg and sugar for about 5 minutes or until the mixture is very pale in color and has significantly increased in volume.
- Sprinkle the flour, baking powder and salt over the eggs and gently whisk in the dry ingredients.
- Add the butter and milk to a liquid measuring cup. Microwave in 30-second increments until the butter is melted. Whisk in the vanilla extract.
- Whisk the warm milk mixture into the batter until smooth.
- Spoon the batter into the cupcake liners filling each about 2/3 to 3/4 full. You should end up with 6 cupcakes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until the tops look set and are slightly firm/springy to the touch, or an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cupcakes for 10 minutes in the pan, then remove from the pan and continue cooling on a cooling rack.
- To make the ganache: heat up the heavy cream in the microwave in 30 second intervals until hot. Add in the chocolate chips and let them sit for a minute in the hot heavy cream before stirring until everything is combined. Allow to cool and thicken up before spreading on the cupcakes and adding sprinkles on top.
